Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I use insect repellent?Insect repellents can help reduce exposure to mosquito bites that may carry viruses such as West Nile virus and EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) that can cause serious illness and even death. Using insect repellent allows you to continue to play and work outdoors with a reduced risk of mosquito bites.(CDC) Apply repellent when you are going to be outdoors. Even if you don't notice mosquitoes there is a good chance that they are around. Many of the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus bite between dusk and dawn. If you are outdoors around these times of the day, it is especially important to apply repellent. In many parts of the country, there are mosquitoes that also bite during the day, and some of these mosquitoes have also been found to carry West Nile virus. (CDC) To repel ticks, the CDC recommends using insect repellent with DEET (Ben's® Tick & Insect Repellent) or Picaradin (Natrapel 8 hour) and clothing. You should also follow these recommendations:
Other than the routine precautions (see response to question 5), the EPA does not recommend specific precautions for using registered repellents on pregnant or lactating women. Yes. People can, and should, use both a sunscreen and an insect repellent when they are outdoors. Follow the instructions on the package for proper application of each product. In general, the recommendation is to apply sunscreen first, followed by repellent. EPA recommends the following precautions when using insect repellents:

Although insect repellents work differently on everyone due to body chemistry and other factors such whether you are sweating, our studies show that Ben's® 30 provides six hours of protection and Ben's® 100 provides 10 hours of protection or more. We replaced alcohol in Ben's® 30 Tick & Insect Repellent because water does not evaporate as quickly as alcohol, and does not open the pores; therefore it is a longer lasting formula that does not need to be reapplied as frequently. Alcohol also creates a strong aroma providing the traditional "insect repellent" smell. The water-based Ben's® 30 formula does not have a scent that is as strong as some alcohol based repellents. Ben's® 30 Tick & Insect Repellent contains 30 percent DEET and is the amount recommended from the CDC for protection from disease carrying insects. Studies show that Ben's® 30 provides up to 6 hours of protections making it a perfect choice when hiking, camping or enjoying other outdoor activities in areas of light to heavy insect infestation or whenever ticks may be present. Ben's® 100 Tick & Insect Repellent contains 98 percent DEET, the highest concentration -- and therefore one of the longest lasting DEET formulas available from any manufacturer. It is recommended for use in areas of heavy insect infestation and studies show that it will provide up to 10 hours of protection against biting insects and ticks.A higher percentage of DEET in a repellent does not mean that your protection is better - just that it will last longer. The more DEET a repellent contains the longer time it can protect you from mosquito bites. (CDC) The chemical DEET will react as a solvent to some synthetic fabrics, plastics, leather, furniture and paints. (See package labeling.) Most nylon materials are not affected by DEET. Just to be safe, you should test an inconspicuous area on the fabric. Approx. 400 sprays in a 4 oz. bottle and 125 in a 1.25 oz. bottle. US Ben's® products do not have an expiration date. The Natrapel® 8 hour formula is new to the market. After much research Tender determined that consumers really want to have a DEET-Free repellent that works! Natrapel® 8 hour is proven as effective as DEET, offering protection for up to 8 hours at a time! Although repellents can work differently on everyone due to body chemistry, our studies show that Natrapel® 8 hour provides 8 hours of proven DEET-free protection from insects and bugs. Enjoy the outdoors longer without the worry. Specially formulated with 20% picaridin, the non-greasy Natrapel® 8 Hour provides effective protection from mosquitoes, black flies, ticks and more. All insect repellents are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In order to put an insect repellent on the market the EPA requires both safety and efficacy testing. The results of these tests will allow the repellent to make claims on their package. The efficacy studies on our Natrapel 8-Hour was 8 hours of protection. This is as effective against biting insects as many DEET repellents. Natrapel® 8 hour is the DEET-Free insect repellent that works! The active ingredient in Natrapel® 8 hour is Picaridin. The EPA has approved this ingredient for use as a personal insect repellent. That being said, Tender has not done safety testing on this product for infants. We suggest discussing the use of repellents with your child's physician for further advice. Natrapel® 8 hour is not designed for dogs. You should take any precautions that you might take for humans, such as keeping it away from their eyes and following the directions. Sometimes they may require a bath to wash away the repellent. The active ingredient in Natrapel® 8 hour is Picaridin. The EPA has approved this ingredient for use as a personal insect repellent. In studies using laboratory animals, Picaridin technical is of relatively low acute toxicity (describes the adverse effects resulting from a single exposure to a substance). Toxicity Category III (slightly toxic) for acute oral and acute dermal; and Toxicity Category IV (practically non-toxic) for primary eye and skin irritation. All insect repellents are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In order to put an insect repellent on the market the EPA requires both safety and efficacy testing. Other than the precautions and guidelines for use listed in the answer to question 5, EPA does not recommend any additional precautions for using registered repellents on pregnant or lactating women, or on children. However, none of our testing has been done on pregnant women. We recommend that you contact your physician with additional questions. US Natrapel® 8 hour products do not have an expiration date. Our After Burn® aloe gel contains pure Aloe Vera and the anesthetic lidocaine to offer instant relief from the discomfort of sunburn or windburn. Many other aloe gels on the market contain alcohol or other ingredients which may dry out the skin and prevent healing.
